Take a trip to the Amazon from the comfort of your couch using Google Maps

Visit a lush jungle paradise courtesy of your computer

Google's Street View map feature has already grown far beyond the typical lanes and boulevards by creating detailed maps of venues like?national parks and even the?Great Barrier Reef. Now, the innovative mapping feature has expanded its reach even further by converting large portions of the Amazon Basin into a digital paradise ready to be explored.

Some of the highlights of the Street View tour include a boat ride down the main stretch of the Rio Negro river, an on-foot hike down a lush forest trail, as well as stunning photography from dozens of points along the flooded Amazon Basin. There are dozen of points and several stretches of both water and land to explore, so you should be busy for quite a while.

The Google Maps team was actually invited to the area by the?Amazonas Sustainable Foundation, a group dedicated to preserving the natural splendor of the region while also elevating the quality of life of its residents. By partnering with Google, the group hopes to raise awareness and curiosity about this tucked-away pocket of the world.
